This is a checklist for what international students studying in Germany have to do or should know:
1) Civil Registration
Every foreign non-EU student has to register officially at the
registration office and the immigration office. For my registration, I had to bring 2 photographs, a passport or identity card, my German Student ID, tenancy agreement and proof of health insurance. As a non-EU-Students, I also had to bring a statement of financial support for myself.
2) Health Insurance
Students from non EU-countries have to take out a health policy with a German health insurance for the period of their stay. There a several German health insurance companies, however your school will probably recommend one and/or have a special agreement with a local company.
3) Emergency Numbers
Police: 110
Fire department and ambulance: 112
If you do end up going to the hospital, you should bring your health insurance card and will be treated free of charge. If it is a weekend or holiday, you must go to the emergency room, which has extra fees.
4) Social fees
Every student at a German university has to pay social fees. These are not tuition fees but a contribution for the different facilities which you may use as a student (e. g. library, student canteen, sports facilities). This may also contribute to transportation that comes with your student card.
5) German Academic Holidays
Christmas: Dec 23 – Jan 8
Easter: April 5-10
Pentecost: May 26-29
